One Law For All Update From Maryam Namazie

Hello

Thank you so much to those of you who sent in donations following our December appeal for One Law for All. We managed to raise £2,700 and now have ten 100Club donors supporting us every month.

With the money we’ve raised we are sending out letters to all Members of Parliament (including Peers) calling for an amendment to the Arbitration Act in order to stop Sharia courts from dealing with civil, family, and criminal matters and violating civil rights. We shall also be holding a debate in the Houses of Parliament to highlight the issues and gain support amongst MPs. In our next letter we shall be asking you for help in contacting your MP in order to secure support for our campaign and give you further information on the meeting in Parliament.

In the meantime, we have organised an International Conference on Women’s Rights, Sharia Law and Secularism on 12 March at the University of London Union from 10.00-19.00. The one-day conference marking International Women’s Day will discuss religion’s impact on women’s rights; religion and secularism and religion and the law. Speakers include Philosopher A.C. Grayling, Honorary Speaker of the Belgian Senate Anne-Marie Lizin; National Secular Society Vice President Elizabeth O'Casey; and women’s rights campaigner Yasmin Rehman. There will also be a showing of Ghazi Rabihavi’s play, Stoning, which Harold Pinter has described as ‘a very strong and powerful piece of work, beautifully constructed.’ You can find out more about the conference and booking a space via our website:

http://www.onelawforall.org.uk/12-march-2010-international-conference-on-women%e2%80%99s-rights-sharia-law-and-secularism-london/
You may register on the day at the door but it would help us if you could pre-register.

Other recent activities that may be of interest to you are: a letter we have written to the Prime Minister; a Seminar entitled Enemies not Allies that was recently held in January (a report is forthcoming); a press release exposing the Muslim Arbitration Tribunal as liars after our correspondence with the Director of Public Prosecutions; and finally, a statement on the Channel 4 Dispatches: Lessons in Hate and Violence as well as on solicitors offering Sharia advice. Links to all of these can be found in the notes below.

I want to personally thank you again for your donations and/or support. Please do continue to support our work - every penny does make a real difference to us. And nothing we do would be possible were it not for your help.
We look forward to hearing from you and hope to see you at our 12 March event.

Warmest wishes

Maryam

Take AIM For Sakineh & The Green Revolution In Iran

From Avaaz:
Dear Friends,
Iran could execute Sakineh Ashtiani tomorrow. We saved her from stoning, now we have 24 hours to get key powers to take emergency action to stop this shameful killing.
Tomorrow, Iran could execute Sakineh Ashtiani.
Our global outcry stopped her unjust stoning sentence in July. Now we have 24 hours to save her life.

Iran's allies and key UN powers are our best hope -- they could persuade Iran of the serious political cost of this high-profile killing. Click below to send them an urgent call to action and send this to everyone -- it only takes three minutes and we are her last chance:
Sakineh's adultery case is a tragic sham stacked with human rights violations. First, she was to be stoned to death. But the Iranian government had to revoke the sentence after her children generated a worldwide outcry against the farcical trial -- she could not speak the language used in court, and the alleged incidents of adultery took place after her husband's death.

Then her lawyer was forced into exile, and the prosecution conjured up a new trumped-up charge for which she would be executed -- the murder of her husband. Despite this being double jeopardy, as she is already serving time for alleged complicity in this crime, Sakineh was tortured and paraded on national television to 'confess', and was found guilty. Since then the regime has arrested two German journalists, her lawyer and her son, who has bravely led the international campaign to save his mother. All remain in prison and Sakineh's son and lawyer have been also tortured and have no access to lawyers.

Now Iranian human rights activists state an order has just been issued from Tehran to implement her killing immediately. She is on the list and tomorrow is execution day.

Our persistent campaigning led Iran to drop Sakineh's stoning sentence and captured the attention of leaders in countries with influence on Iran, like Turkey and Brazil. Now let's urgently raise our voices to stop her killing and inhumane treatment and free her, her lawyer, her son and the jailed German journalists.

Send a message and share this emergency call with friends and family:
A massive public outcry has the moral authority to stop heinous crimes. Let's use these 24 hours to send a clear message -- the world is watching and we all stand together today to save Sakineh's life and against injustice everywhere.

With hope and determination,
Alice, Stephanie, Pascal, Giulia, Benjamin and the whole of the Avaaz team

ACT NOW
PLEASE NOTE: WE WILL BE GATHERING AT THE EMBASSY OF THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN IN PARIS AT 2PM (4 Avenue d'IĆ©na 75116 Paris) AND MARCHING TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT IN BRUSSELS. JOIN US. WE MUST SAVE SAKINEH’S LIFE AND SECURE HER FREEDOM AND THAT OF HER SON, LAWYER AND THE TWO GERMAN JOURNALISTS. AND WE MUST END STONING NOW!

According to news received by the International Committee against Stoning and International Committee against Execution on 1 November 2010, the authorities in Tehran have given the go ahead to Tabriz prison for the execution of Iran stoning case Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani. It has been reported that she is to be executed this Wednesday 3 November.
We had previously reported that the casefile regarding the murder case of Ms Ashtiani’s husband had been seized from her lawyer’s office, Houtan Kian, and found missing from the prosecutor’s Oskoo branch office so as to stitch Ms Ashtiani up with trumped up murder charges.  [Another man has already served a prison sentence and is now free for her husband’s murder.]  Ms Ashtiani’s son, Sajjad Ghaderzadeh, and her lawyer, Houtan Kian, have warned of the regime’s plan to do so on many occasions. With the arrest of Ms Ashtiani’s son and lawyer on 10 October and her not having had any visitation rights since 11 August and after fabricating a new case against her, the “Human Rights Commission” of the regime has announced that: ‘according to the existing evidence, her guilt has been confirmed.’ In fact, the regime has created a new scenario in order to expedite her execution.

In other news, Sajjad Ghaderzadeh and Houtan Kian have been severely tortured in order to obtain confessions against Sakineh and themselves since their arrests on 10 October along with two German journalists. The initial interrogations by the Ministry of Intelligence have now been completed and the casefile sent to the National Prosecutor General and Judiciary Spokesperson, Mohsen-Ejehi, in Tehran rather than being handled in Tabriz. Their families are concerned for their wellbeing. When attempting to secure lawyers for the two, authorities have said that the two men did not need legal representation.
Sajjad and Houtan Kian’s only ‘crime’ has been to defend Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani and proclaim her innocence with facts and evidence. That their contact with Mina Ahadi is considered a crime is absurd given that Ahadi has been contacted by death row prisoners and their families and lawyers for many years now, including directly from prison. This is because of her many years of work against stoning and executions.

The International Committees against Stoning and Execution call on international bodies and the people of the world to come out in full force against the state-sponsored murder of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.  Ms Ashtiani, Sajjad Ghaderzadeh, Houtan Kian and the two German journalists must be immediately and unconditionally released.

ACT NOW!

1. Contact government officials, MPs, MEPs, and the UN asking them to intervene urgently. Governments must immediately summon the Islamic Republic of Iran’s ambassadors and demand that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani’s execution be stopped and that she along with her son, Sajjad Ghaderzadeh, and lawyer, Houtan Kian, and the two German journalists be immediately released.

2. Send letters of condemnation to the Islamic regime of Iran right away:

The ICAS/E press release is below, both translated to English and in Farsi. (German translation of this post at Julia’s Blog)

We ask all concerned individuals to do the following:

I demand that this government exert the utmost diplomatic pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran to:
a) prevent the execution of Sakineh Ashtiani
b) secure the immediate and unconditional freedom of Sakineh Ashtiani, Sajjad Ghaderzadeh, and Houtan Kian.
Sincerely,
[your name]

2) Contact Bernard Kouchner, the Foreign Minister of France (bernard.kouchner@diplomatie.gouv.fr), with the following message asking France to be the first to close the doors to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic in France:
Dear Mr. Kouchner,
It has come to my attention that the Islamic Republic intends to execute Sakineh Ashtiani within the next two days. If the Islamic Republic executes Sakineh Ashtiani, I urge the French government to close the doors to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in France. The honorable people of France, and in particular the women of France, have shown their broad and consistent support for Sakineh Ashtiani and her family; Carla Bruni Sarkozy has publicly advocated in Sakineh’s defense, and drawn a slanderous response from the Islamic regime for doing so; and France’s President Sarkozy has taken it as his personal duty to defend Sakineh Ashtiani. France should take the international lead in closing the regime’s embassy in Paris. It is the only appropriate diplomatic response to the Islamic Republic regime’s ongoing perpetration of human rights atrocities.
Sincerely,
[your name]

3) Send this sample letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, and encourage everyone you know to do the same. [ SAMPLE LETTER ] Contact addresses to send to: inquiries@un.org, npillay@ohchr.org, urgent-action@ohchr.org

4) Mobilize to protest at the United Nations in New York City on December 11 to
a) demand a UN resolution to criminalize stoning, and
b) to demand immediate expulsion from the UN Commission on the Status of Women of the Islamic Republic of Iran and all other states whose authority is dependent on gender apartheid and violence against women.

If Sakineh is executed, the UN will be held responsible for its refusal to act or even issue a strong statement against the stoning of Sakineh Ashtiani.

5) If the Islamic Republic executes Sakineh Ashtiani, regardless of how they implement the murder, people living near offices and embassies of the Islamic Republic should immediately deposit a pile of stones (painted red if possible) in front of the door or gate to the regime’s office or embassy. If feasible, tape photos and/or posters of Sakineh to the doors, windows, gates, etc.

ICAS/E Press Release #85: The Islamic Republic Intends to Execute Sakineh Immediately

According to the news received by the International Committees against Execution and Stoning this evening, November 1st, the Islamic regime’s officials in Tehran have sent the order to implement Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani’s execution sentence to the office of sentence implementation at Tabriz prison. It has been said that they mean to execute Sakineh on Wednesday, November 3rd.

We have previously reported that the regime has stolen the murder files of Sakineh Mohammadi’s husband from the office of Houtan Kian and from the court of the city of Oskoo in order to make the necessary fabrications that would show Sakineh as being guilty. Sajjad and Houtan had warned about this eventuality many times. With the arrest of Sakineh’s lawyer and her son, and holding Sakineh herself incommunicado, on the one hand, and by tampering with the case files on the other, the Islamic Republic’s “human rights” entity has declared in a press release that “according to existing documents, Mrs. Ashtiani’s guilt is proven.” Indeed, [despite their best efforts,] the Islamic Republic has created a whole scenario against Sakineh’s execution.

We call on all concerned international organizations and people of the world to do all they can to prevent the killing of Sakineh. Sakineh, Sajjad, Houtan Kian and the two German journalists should be freed immediately and unconditionally.

Response to Letters Asking For Help For Sakineh, Mostafaei & Iran

As part of it's work supporting the campaigns to save Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani from her sentence of death by stoning in Iran, The AIM and several of it's members have emailed and posted a number of letters and petitions to a large number of government officials, human rights organisations and media outlets. A few days ago, The AIM received a response to one of the emails sent which you can read below. I have also received a response to a letter I sent to Downing Street which was then passed to The UK Foreign Commonwealth Office asking for pressure to be applied for Iran to be removed from The UN Commission on the Status of Women. The letter text and responses are available to read here. These letters and emails were based on samples provided by our comrades at Mission Free Iran.

Original Email to EU Governments:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you with an urgent request that you intervene with the authorities in the Islamic Republic of Iran, who continue to harass, intimidate and persecute Mohammad Mostafaei, and have issued a warrant for his arrest, in the wake of the international outcry demanding freedom for his client, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani. The regime has also taken as hostages Mostafaei's wife and brother-in-law (Fereshteh and Farhad Halimi), imprisoning them in a craven attempt to force Mostafaei to turn himself in.

Mohammad Mostafaei is a lawyer who has honorably and courageously defended Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani against a stoning execution in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The worldwide outcry against the execution of Sakineh Ashtiani has created embarrassment and political difficulties for the Islamic Republic, and they have harassed and attempted to intimidate Mr. Mostafaei in an effort to reduce the pressure on the regime that has been caused by the campaign for Mostafaei's client Ashtiani.

I condemn the reprehensible injustice of the Islamic Republic; the regime should not be allowed a free hand to silence Mostafaei and terrorize his family in this way. Iranian lawyers must be free to represent their clients without fear of harassment and intimidation of themselves or their loved ones. I therefore demand immediate and unconditional freedom of Mostafaei's family; immediate and unconditional guarantee for Mostafaei's safety and freedom of practicing his legal obligations towards his clients; immediate end to harassment and intimidation of Mostafaei, his family, friends, and colleagues; and immediate and unconditional freedom for Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is solely responsible for the safety and freedom of Mr. Mostafaei.

Diplomatic sanctions, including travel bans, freezing of bank accounts, and expulsion from international organizations such as the UN must be used to force the Islamic Republic to comply with international law and standards of human rights. I expect this government to take immediate steps to implement serious diplomatic sanctions against the criminal regime of the Islamic Republic.

Sincerely,

The Anti-Injustice Movement

Response to Email from Finland:

Dear people of The Anti-Injustice Movement,

Finland, as a part of the European Union, is following closely the developments of the human rights situation in Iran. We are aware of Ms. Ashtiani’s case and are keeping watch on her situation.

Iran is a State Party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. This Covenant includes e. g. right to a just and fair trial, which is also contained in the Constitution of Iran. The Covenant also prohibits torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, has recently voiced EU’s profound concern on Iran's increasing use of the death penalty and discrimination against religious and ethnic minorities and women.

The EU has repeatedly demanded Iran to comply with its international and national human rights obligations. Finland and other EU countries have summoned the Ambassadors of Iran several times in regard to the human rights situation in Iran. We also continue to support efforts to improve the human rights situation in Iran.

Sincerely,

Jussi Soini
Regional Manager
Unit for the Middle East and North Africa
Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland

24 July 2010 - International Sakine Ashtiani Mohammadi Day

Citizens of the World against Stoning!

We, the undersigned, are extremely concerned about the fate of 43 year old Sakine Ashtiani Mohamadi and fear she may be executed in Iran at any time for ‘having an illicit relationship.’

We call on people everywhere to intensify their protests by marking Saturday 24 July as the International Sakine Ashtiani Mohammadi Day. On the Saturday, we ask you to come out on to the streets and in city centres across the globe at 2pm local time bringing photos of Sakine and messages in her defence and against stoning and execution. Other measures that can be taken include highlighting her case wherever possible, signing the petition (http://stopstonningnow.com/sakine/sakin284.php?nr=50326944〈=en), joining rallies, and keeping pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The mother of two has already received 99 lashes and been sentenced to death by stoning. Sajjad, her 22-year-old son, who raised the alarm of her imminent stoning when there was no further legal recourse via an open letter to the people of the world (http://stopstonningnow.com/sakine/sakin284.php?nr=50326944〈=en) and said ‘there is no justice’ in Iran (http://iransolidarity.blogspot.com/2010/07/letter-to-mina-ahadi-and-all-those.html) has been summoned to the Ministry of Intelligence for his brave efforts to secure his mother’s freedom.

As a result of the public outcry, the embassy of the Islamic regime of Iran in London has issued a press release stating that the regime did not intend to stone her, that stoning in Iran was rare and that there was no truth to the reports (http://iransolidarity.blogspot.com/2010/07/keep-pressure-on-until-we-end-stoning.html); her lawyer, however, has made it clear that “Iranian embassies are not a part of the judiciary system, and it is the judiciary which should cancel this sentence.” Rather than being rare, over 100 known stonings have already taken place in Iran and another 60 known cases await death by stoning (http://iransolidarity.org.uk/Sangsarha%20lst-farshad-july2010.pdf). Since the global protest, families of others held in Tabriz prison have come forward with news of 170 people sentenced to death, including children, youth, and 18 men and women for being gay. Two other women also await death by stoning in the same prison including Azar Bagheri who was 15 when she was arrested and 25 year old Maryam Ghorbanzadeh.

On 24 July 2010 at 2pm join us and make the world stand still in its rage against medievalism and barbarity and in its support of humanity. Sakine, her children and the many others awaiting death by stoning and execution deserve nothing less.

International Day Against Stoning

The Stoning Of Soroya M., 2008 - Based on a true story.

This Sunday, 11th July is International Day Against Stoning.

In such 'advanced' times as those in which we are supposedly living, such a thing still needs to exist? There is still a movement trying to end stoning as a form of capital punishment? Such practises STILL occur?

Yes. They do. I have known for a long time that this is the case but I still can't quite believe it. Of course that is a luxury that many women do not have - not believing it to be the case.

This Sunday, 11th July is International Day Against Stoning.

I have to keep saying it to remind myself that this is actually real, in this day and age of so-called civilisation.

Stoning as a form of punishment and execution will be familiar to most of us from the stories and tales within the three main holy books. The majority of nations and religions have evolved and moved past using this although the death penalty does still exist in other forms. Within the last decade a number of Muslim countries have handed down and carried out sentences of stoning as part of Islamic Sharia Law. In Iran 3 people were stoned to death in 2006/07 and 9 women and 2 men have been sentenced to death by stoning since January 2008. In Somalia in October 2008 Aisho Ibrahim Dhuhulow was buried up to her neck and stoned to death in front or over 1000 people at a football stadium having earlier pled guilty to adultery. It was later found that she was 13 years old. Stoning is also known to be used as a method of execution both with and without trial in Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Nigeria and United Arab Emirates. When stoning a person 'the stones used must be large enough to cause the condemned pain, but not sufficient to kill immediately.' For more information about the ins and outs of Sharia Law and the punishments prescribed under it please have a look through this very disturbing English translation of The Islamic Penal Code of Iran.

This Sunday, 11th July is International Day Against Stoning.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is a 43 year old Iranian mother of two. She was sentenced to death by stoning for the 'crime' of adultery. International governments, campaigners and activists have fought against this sentence and the Islamic Republic of Iran has announced that she will no longer be stoned for her crime. This is not a victory however as she will now likely be hanged instead. The AIM is one of the many organisations that has petitioned against the sentence, and we will continue to do so. We will continue in the struggle against this barbaric and cruel practice until the battle is won.

This Sunday, 11th July is International Day Against Stoning.

To mark this day, please join us in some kind of protest or act of solidarity. Below I have listed details of a number of planned protests but list is not comprehensive so please look up details in your area. If there is nothing planned in your area it is not too late to plan one. Instead of a rally or protest you may wish to perform your own act of solidarity. Be creative and do whatever feels right to you based on the circumstances you are in but be sure to share your act of solidarity with the world. Take pictures or film it and please send it to us to share on our site, or to our friends and fellow activists at Mission Free Iran. Some examples of things you might do are to recite a poem or perform a song to the camera, publish a piece of writing on the subject, lay a stone somewhere with a message of support, have friends, family and passers by write messages of support and lay them held down with stones. Write the names of recent victims of stoning and those currently facing death by stoning on stones and lay them in solidarity. Go to a public place and hold up a sign or picture. Hand out leaflets or petitions.

Whatever you do, please do something. I am against the death penalty in all cases and carried out in any way, but I find the act of stoning a person to death to be particularly cruel, and it is made even more so by it's method of application. It is often applied without fair trial, sometimes even without a trial at all, and is commonly used for such 'crimes' as adultery, homosexuality and political dissent.

This Sunday, 11th July is International Day Against Stoning. Please, do something.

Take Action To Stop The Stoning Of Sakine Mohammadi

Via Mission Free Iran

Friends: URGENT ACTION is required on behalf of Sakine Mohammadi.

This post includes the following:

1) The appeal from her children in English

2) Sample letters to send to
– the UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights copied to Amnesty International
– the International Committee of the Red Cross

Two things to do:
1) Please send the sample letters adjusted per your preferences to the targeted recipients
2) Please send the children’s letter to your local newspaper with an explanation of why we need to support these children and take a stand against execution in Iran.

LETTER FROM THE CHILDREN OF SAKINE MOHAMMADI:
Do not allow our nightmare become a reality, Protest against our mother’s stoning!

Today we stretch out our hands to the people of the whole world. It is now five years that we have lived in fear and in horror, deprived of motherly love. Is the world so cruel that it can watch this catastrophe and do nothing about it?
We are Sakine Mohammadi e Ashtiani’s children, Fasride and Sajjad Mohamamadi e Ashtiani. Since our childhood we have been acquainted with the pain of knowing that our mother is imprisoned and awaiting a catastrophe. To tell the truth, the term “stoning” is so horrific that we try never to use it. We instead say our mother is in danger, she might be killed, and she deserves everyone’s help.

Today, when nearly all options have reached dead-ends, and our mother’s lawyer says that she is in a dangerous situation, we resort to you. We resort to the people of the world, no matter who you are and where in the world you live. We resort to you, people of Iran, all of you who have experienced the pain and anguish of the horror of losing a loved one.

Please help our mother return home!

We especially stretch our hand out to the Iranians living abroad. Help to prevent this nightmare from becoming reality. Save our mother. We are unable to explain the anguish of every moment, every second of our lives. Words are unable to articulate our fear…

Help to save our mother. Write to and ask officials to free her. Tell them that she doesn’t have a civil complainant and has not done any wrong. Our mother should not be killed. Is there any one hearing this and rushing to our assistance?

Faride and Sajjad Mohammadi e Ashtiani

SAMPLE LETTER TO NAVI PILLAY, UN High Commissioner for the Office of Human Rights:

Dear Ms. Pillay,

I am writing to you with an urgent demand that you intervene with the authorities in the Islamic Republic of Iran, who are preparing to execute by stoning Sakine Mohammadi e Ashtiani. Stoning is a barbaric form of torture and execution that should be outlawed worldwide. It is your responsibility to step in and demand a halt to these proceedings.

The children of Ms. Mohammadi e Ashtiana have written a letter in her defense, and have issued a call to the world asking for help. Their letter is here; I suggest you read it, and then act according to their heartrending demands.

Sincerely,
[your name]

SAMPLE LETTER TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED CROSS:

Dear Ms. Westphal and Ms. Krimitsas,

I am writing to you with an urgent request that you intervene with the authorities in the Islamic Republic of Iran, who are preparing to execute by stoning Sakine Mohammadi e Ashtiani. Stoning is a barbaric form of torture and execution that should be outlawed worldwide. Multilateral organizations have thus far refused to step in and put a halt to the criminal actions perpetrated by the Islamic Republic. Your mandate encourages your organization to undertake the work of visiting prisoners in situations of internal violence, where the Geneva Conventions do not apply. I ask you to step in and demand a halt to these and other ongoing criminal and barbaric proceedings in the Islamic Republic

The children of Ms. Mohammadi e Ashtiana have written a letter in her defense, and have issued a call to the world asking for help. Their letter is here; please read it, and then act according to their heartrending demands.

Sincerely,
[your name]

We Are All Neda

Dearest Neda,

It has been a year since you were cruelly taken from your friends, from your family and from those you loved, and much has happened in that time. I cannot begin to tell it all but there are some things that we around the world who know of you wish to be able to share with you.

If I were to be speaking to you now I would have many things to say to you.

I would say sorry. Not because I caused it, but because I feel it. Sorry for the life you were forced to live, that it was one of oppression, inequality and fear. Sorry for your death, for the pain and fear that it caused you and that it left behind for your family. Sorry that your family were afterwards forced from their home and your fiance forced into hiding out of fear. Sorry that your grave was desecrated, your headstone removed, bullets fired into your portrait to destroy it.
Most of all, sorry for the many others who shared your fate in having such a life and such a death, and who continue to share that fate.

I would also say you did not die in vain. Your struggle is no longer hidden, no longer only for the people of Iran, no longer unknown to the rest of us in this world. For this I would say thank you. You certainly did not plan to, but you brought Iran into the world's consciousness. You have galvanised your people into revolution. You have inspired us all to stand, to march, to rally, to shout, to protest, to demand.

Your death has been seen by many, and you are in the hearts of revolutionaries and supporters of equality and freedom all over the world. Though of little comfort, you have given the Iranian people such spirit and determination that the only possible outcome is their success in your quest. Your death has ensured that the people of not just Iran, but of the world, are united in this battle. Men and women of all ages, all races, all religions and all nationalities stand together in solidarity and raise their collective voice to demand freedom for your people in Iran. We stand together today to demand this in your name, and in the name of all those many others who have given their time, their efforts, their freedom, and like you, their lives.

I did not know you, and I will not pretend otherwise. But I feel that I do. I never used to be especially political, as you never used to be, but I saw an injustice as you did, and I feel compelled to stand against it as you did. But I have what you wanted. I have freedom, I have equality, I have peace, I have security. And I shall not take it for granted. You saw a revolution of your people in your country, and now today, we see a revolution of many people in many countries. You demanded that the people's vote be counted, and now we all demand that the people's vote be counted. And we shall not be stopped., not until what I have has been given to your people in Iran, as you wanted for them.

I would speak these words to you on my behalf, but also on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of people across the globe who remember you today, who never knew you but will never forget you. Until everyone has those basic things that you stood up and asked for on this day one year ago...until then, we are all Neda.
